Cynthia Downing Bryant serves as Dean of the College of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies at Southern University and A&M College, the flagship institution of the nation’s only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) system. Since her appointment in 2017, she has led academic programs across the humanities, arts, digital media, and interdisciplinary studies, supporting and advancing initiatives in academic innovation, faculty development, student success, and strategic planning. A first-generation college graduate and proud alumna of Southern University, Bryant is committed to the transformative power of higher education. Her career progression from faculty member to dean reflects her dedication to leadership development and mentorship. She is passionate about empowering students, faculty, and staff to realize opportunities beyond what they initially imagined. Bryant earned a Ph.D. in English from Louisiana State University, an M.A. in English from the University of Akron, and a B.A. in English from Southern University. Trained in African American literature and culture, her interests include Black women’s literature and spirituality, interdisciplinary humanities, adult education, study abroad development, and expanding educational opportunities at HBCUs.
