Renata Kobetts Miller is Dean of Humanities and Arts and Professor of English at the City College of New York. She is a passionate champion for innovative liberal arts education. Under her leadership, the Division of Humanities and Arts launched a new Black Studies Department, has built a comprehensive advising program, and has achieved sustained and significant growth in the number of students majoring in Humanities and Arts. Supported by funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Division’s Humanities Internships program—which she designed and supervises—has established an extensive network of community partnerships and pioneered new pedagogical models integrating career preparation with academic study. The program advances both faculty research and experiential learning opportunities for students. Renata has also built a dynamic fundraising and external relations program, securing major support from private donors, foundations, and federal agencies. Before becoming dean, Renata served as deputy dean, English Department chair, and director of several academic programs, while also holding leadership roles in faculty governance. A scholar of Victorian literature and culture, she is the author of two books and numerous essays on nineteenth-century literature, culture, and the history of disciplines in England. She holds an MA and a PhD from Indiana University and an AB from Princeton University.
