2026 John Smartt Summer Scholar

Kailyn Harris-Gilliam is a doctoral student at North Carolina State University in the Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development program with a concentration in Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice. Her research interests center on asset-based approaches, minority-serving institutions, and broadening participation in undergraduate research and STEM opportunities. In addition to her doctoral studies, Kailyn serves as the Student Engagement Coordinator for a National Science Foundation-funded convergence research center, where she supports initiatives focused on broadening participation across K–20 education and workforce development. Prior to working in higher education, she served as a middle school teacher, an experience that continues to shape her commitment to educational equity and student-centered engagement. Outside of her professional and academic work, Kailyn enjoys spending time outdoors with her dog, Harley.
