2026 MSI Aspiring Leader

Justin T. Brown is University Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Academic Programming & Policy, overseeing the Office of Academic Program Review in the Central Office of the City University of New York (CUNY). As part of his portfolio, Brown provides administrative expertise, regulatory knowledge, and consultation on university policy, governance, and new academic program development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; faculty personnel actions; and oversees the establishment and (re)certification of institutional research centers, institutes, and consortia. He works closely with disciplinary-area University Deans on the continued enhancement of academic program offerings, serves as a senior advisor to the Senior University Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Programming on these matters, and provides additional counsel to other Office of Academic Affairs administrators as needed. Brown and his team work with all 26 university campuses to support their academic needs. Prior to his current position, he was the 2023-2024 CUNY University Faculty Leadership Fellow in the University Office of Faculty Affairs. 

Brown’s primary faculty appointment is at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY, where he is Professor of Health Sciences and previously served as Program Director of Public & Community Health and Co-Director of Liberal Arts: Health Humanities. He has an extensive background in planning, evaluation, curriculum design, assessment, and participatory community engagement. Additionally, at the CUNY Graduate Center, he is on the doctoral faculty in Critical Psychology (Critical Psychology/Personality and Environmental Psychology); Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies; Social Welfare; master’s faculty in Women’s and Gender Studies and faculty in the LGBTQ Studies Advanced Certificate program of which he also co-developed while serving as the Executive Director for the Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS). Beyond CLAGS, Brown has supported some of his work institutionally, through his previous position as Deputy Director of the CUNY Institute for Health Equity (CIHE) and funding from the Black, Race, Ethnic Studies Initiative (BRESI). Brown’s recent scholarly projects include “Queering Action in Contentious Times: Public Scholarship for Queers Lives & Justice” and “Jumpstarting the Black and Latinx Emerging Scholars Pipeline” with a forthcoming co-authored book chapter, “Grounding Health Humanities through Community College Pedagogies”. Brown’s service also extends to the community, which includes serving as Co-Chair of the Bronx Community Research Review Board (BxCRRB) and Vice Chair of the Manhattan-Staten Island Area Health Education Center (MSI-AHEC).
