Alvin Schexnider

Alvin J. Schexnider earned a B. A. in political science in 1968 at what is now Grambling State University. After discharge from the U. S. Army in Vietnam, he entered graduate school at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he was awarded M.A and PhD degrees in political science.

In a career that spans over four decades, Alvin has held faculty and academic administrative positions at major research universities. He has led two Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and he has served on the board of the Center for Minority Serving Institutions since its inception.

Alvin’s articles have appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and Trusteeship. He has consulted on board governance at more than fifty colleges and universities nationwide. His latest book, Reimagining the Academic Presidency: A Leadership Guide Amidst Uncertainty and Upheaval, coauthored with two former presidents, is scheduled for release by Routledge Publishing in September 2026. Alvin is married, is the father of a son and a daughter, and he has two grandchildren.
