Julian Vasquez Heilig

Julian Vasquez Heilig is currently Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at California State University, Sacramento. Julian also serves as the Director of the Doctorate in Educational Leadership, one of four chair-level positions in the College of Education. He has held five academic leadership roles in higher education organizations and institutions. These experiences have provided formative professional perspectives to bridge theory, leadership, policy, and practice. Julian’s research includes examining how education reforms impact urban students of color. He also studies issues of access, diversity, and equity in higher education. The sum of his scholarship is more than 60 articles, chapters, and reports. He has received more than 30 scholarly awards and recognitions.

His work has been cited by the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, USAToday, Education Week, Huffington Postand other print and electronic media outlets. He has also appeared on local and national radio and TV including PBS, NBC, NBCLatino, NPR, Univision, Al Jazeera, and MSNBC. Julian has also conveyed invited testimony in state and national legislative bodies and spoken at more than 25 universities. He has lectured about education policy at more than 100 events worldwide.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Education Administration and Policy Analysis and an M.A. in Sociology from Stanford University and also holds an M.S.Ed of Higher Education and a B.A. in History and Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Julian also serves on the California NAACP Executive Committee and as Education Chair.
