G. Preston Wilson, Jr.

G. Preston Wilson, Jr. is the Director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers® at the historic Fisk University. Wilson holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Fisk University and a Master of Music in Choral Music Education from Bowling Green State University, where he was awarded the Winifred O. Stone Graduate Fellowship and named the Presidential Graduate Scholar. After teaching in the Toledo Public School system in Toledo, OH, he pursued a PhD in Music Education from the University of Missouri (Columbia). Wilson’s dissertation focused on the lived experiences of successful urban music teachers in elementary schools. His research agenda also includes race and culture relations in music and practical applications of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Wilson’s published works include “A Music Pedagogy for Our Time: Conversation and Critique,” “If Colors Could be Heard They’d Paint Wondrous Tunes: Narratives about Music Education, Race, Ethnicity, and Identity;’ and “Visions of Research in Music Education.” His research presentations include a host of state, regional, national, and international music conferences, including the College Music Society, the International Society for Sociology in Music Education, TEDx Nashville, and the National Association for Negro Musicians. Wilson is the Chair of Diversity Initiatives for TN-ACDA, on the Board of Directors for the Nashville African American Wind Symphony, Inc., the Music City Review, Vocal Arts Nashville, and a member of the Steering Committee for the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. He is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
