Charlotte C. Teague

Charlotte C. Teague serves as associate professor and chairperson for English and Modern Languages, the largest academic department at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) in Huntsville, where she has worked for more than twenty years.
Under her leadership in only four years, the department has experienced unprecedented growth in personnel and majors and improved DFW rates. In addition, she has led curriculum revisions, established a new academic track, and raised the department’s profile through data collection and professional development connected to student recruitment, retention, and success. Known for her strategic planning, problem solving, and leadership, Teague has a reputation for being an action-oriented agent of change.
Prior to her current leadership roles, Teague served for sixteen years as a faculty leader and was recently the recipient of the University’s highest faculty award: The Presidential Citation for Teaching, Research, & Service. She is an award-winning teacher, scholar, and professional writer, with publications including journal articles, book chapters, monographs, book reviews, and creative writing, and her most recent publications appear in Callaloo, The Encyclopedia of Alabama, Critical Insights: The Bluest Eye (Salem Press), and Tributaries: the Journal of Alabama Folklore.
Before entering academia, she worked as a journalist and technical and scientific writer. Through this public, corporate, and government work, Teague gained the expertise that informs her leadership and academic work. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Master of Education in Secondary Education/English from Alabama A&M University, a Master of Arts in English and Technical Communication from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and a Ph.D. in English from Morgan State University.
