Peter Eley

Peter Eley, serves as Interim Dean of the College of Education, Humanities, and Behavioral Sciences and Professor of Mathematics Education at Alabama A&M University (AAMU). Prior to his appointment at AAMU, he worked as a NASA Liaison for Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) through the NASA Office of STEM and Minority University Research and Education Project; Peter has over 20 years of experience in education. 

Peter’s research interests are equity, school policy, and technology. Additionally, Peter has served in several leadership positions in higher education: coordinator, department chair, accreditation lead, and associate dean. He has also been a leader in fundraising, serving as Chairman of the Elizabeth City State Foundation Board (2019-2022), where they raised over 20 million dollars under his leadership and acquired three properties.

Furthermore, he earned tenure and the rank of Full Professor while working at Fayetteville State University (FSU). He served as a Faculty Administrative Fellow at FSU and the University of North Carolina (UNC) System from 2018-2019, Peter was recognized and awarded the UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award Medallion in 2020. He was also selected as a Senior Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute for College and Career Readiness (MICCR) and the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Elizabeth City State University, a master's degree in Applied Mathematics and Mathematics Education, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, all from North Carolina State University.
